Harmen Willemsz Wieringa
active in Friesland, 2nd quarter, 17th century
Portrait of a Man
Oil on panel
22 x 16 inches (56 x 40.6 cm)
Signed and indistinctly dated
There is few biographical data known about Wieringa apart from his work in Friesland where he is recorded as an advisor to the local government, recommending design for buildings and ceremonial carriages. It is documented that Wieringa was married to Margaretha van Tongeren and they had four children together, one of whom was also a portrait painter. Wybrand Simonsz. de Geest I, also a portrait painter in Friesland, had the most influence on Wieringa's work. Wieringa's paintings are rare and most of his known work is kept in Dutch museums; theseare primarily small in size and depict the sitter in full length.
Our painting captures the sitter confidently posed in full length and holding a pair of gloves in his left hand. Highlights of the costume include the full white collar ruff, the gloves and the elegant black shoes contrasted against finely stockinged legs. The sitter is centered between the room's left side and a draped table, while tiled floors help to secure a dignified image. Our painting compares closely to other signed works by Wieringa in the Fries Museum in Leeuwarden and the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Based on the sitter's costume, Rudolf Ekkart of the RKD has dated the work to the middle 1630s.
