Lieve Verschuier was said to have been a pupil of Julius Porcellis and Simon de Vlieger in Rotterdam where the artist stayed his entire life, seldom traveling. Both Porcellis and Vlieger influenced Verschuier in the golden tonality with which he most often graced his compositions. A persistent theme of his paintings is the viewing of his subjects against a setting sun. Verschuier is acknowledged as a great marine artist but he is also documented as a portrait painter, as was his brother, Aelbrecht.
Our painting is a serene and quiet departure from Verschuier's generally busy and more elaborate subjects. A brilliant, golden sun setting and casting a beautiful light through the clouds reveal the only drama of the composition. It is this light that contrasts the somber shadows in which the ships rest. The sails on the foreground fishing boat hang down serenely and reinforce the very tranquil atmosphere.
