Night Market in Antwerp

Oil on canvas
13 x 16.5 in.

Provenance:
Private collection, U.S.

George-Gillis van Haanen was born August 23, 1807 in Utrecht, the son of Casparis Haanen, a painter of interior scenes.   Along with his siblings Adriana, Elizabeth and Remi, George learned to paint from his father. He became a member of the Academy of Amsterdam in 1835, and he first showed his paintings in Munich in 1840. He often showed his work in Vienna. His paintings may be found in the Amsterdam state and municipal museums and in museums in Rotterdam, Utrecht, and Vienna.

Night Market in Antwerp bears resemblance to Haanen's painting The Evening Service from 1853. That painting of the interior of a church at night emphasizes the beauty of candlelight. With our work, a brilliant white moon, partially obscured in a cloudy sky, looms over the warm glow of the busy night market. Shoppers gravitate to the stalls and the open tables that display the market's fairs. The major landmarks of Antwerp, the City Hall at right and the Cathedral in front, are just suggested in the greys of the moonlit night.
