Gerrino Guardabassi was born in Rome in 1841 and was actively painting in Rome and Paris throughout most his life.  A student of the Academy of St. Luke’s, Guardabassi is known as an artist of historic images, portraits and landscapes in the more traditional style of 19th Century Italian School.  He exhibited in both Rome and Turin.

In our painting Portrait of a Young Lady, Guardabassi portrays a seated young woman, her head turned toward the viewer with a gaze to engage one’s attention.  While still  rather young, she appears poised and sophisticated beyond her age.  Her facial expression is innocent and sweet though she is not smiling, but yet inquisitive and introspective at once.  Her clothing, while not particularly ornate, is somber and more mature for her age.  She wears a simple, delicate set of deep red drop earrings and matching double-stranded necklace.  Similarly, her dress is minimal and solemn, a color of dark cobalt blue with a neckline trimmed by lace and setting off her shoulders. Her soft, wispy blond hair is precisely combed and tucked, lending to a mature appearance.
