Very little is known of the life of Meyer von Bremen. He was a student of Karl Sohn and Wilhelm Schadow at the Düsseldorf Academy. He left Germany for Amsterdam, where he became a member of the Academy and medaled in 1850. He painted sweet scenes of young girls and mothers, and was widely collected in the United States.

In the present work, the artist paints a young girl distracted from her studies. She sits at a desk with a large book in front of her, her head resting upon the open pages. The expression of her face is one of dreamy distraction, as she imagines herself in a place far more interesting or romantic than her serious surroundings. The picture is an excellent example of Meyer von Bremen’s charming psychological scenes.
