Dutch, 1767-1820

Dutch Harbor Scene

Oil on panel
21 1/8 x 29 inches (54 x 73.7 cm)

A Dutch master of eighteenth-century marine painting, Nicolaas Bauer was born on September 12, 1767 in Harlingen and died there on March 28, 1820.  He trained with his father, the portrait painter Johannes Antonius and started out as a landscape painter before devoting himself to marine painting.

Our painting is a fine example of the Dutch marine and seascape tradition.  The depiction of a Dutch harbor illustrates the Nineteenth century reinvigoration of the genre. With the dawn of Romanticism, painters in the Dutch marine tradition increasingly emphasized the role of a powerful Nature. In this work, several boats in a harbor struggle with unsettled conditions. As if dancing along the sea’s horizon, many other ships coast the choppy waters. The artist highlights the sky as an important element of the composition contrasting the storm clouds on the left with the crisp patch of blue sky and white clouds on the right. The overall effect is a painting of effective color and movement.
